Johan Meuleman is a lecturer at the Universiteit Leiden, a research fellow of the Leiden-based International Institute for Asian Studies, a professor by special appointment of Islamic History at IAIN Syarif Hidayatullah, Jakarta and the president of the Islamic University of Europe Foundation in the Netherlands.
There is significant participation of intellectual voices from all areas concerned, providing a real contribution to the academic exchange between the Muslim and the Euro-American worlds. The case studies cover regions stretching from China and South-East Asia, passing through Tajikistan, to diaspora communities in the Carribean. Islam in the Era of Globalization reflects the wide diversity that characterizes contemporary Islamic Studies. The book also represents a step towards a new synthesis in Islamic Studies, namely the cooperation of scholars representing diverse disciplinary traditions and various geographical origins and specializations, including both Muslims and non-Muslims. The book uses both theoretical approaches and practical experiences to elaborate the core themes.
